Samsung Galaxy S21 FE – Late Fan Edition Review

Posted on

Taqueriael – Samsung released the Galaxy S21 FE at a rather odd time in my opinion, very far from the Galaxy S21 and very close to the Galaxy S22 that is said to be released in February.

The 620 USD price tag for the cheapest version is not too far from the regular Galaxy S21, which has now come down a bit.

But beyond that, the Galaxy S21 FE is actually a phone as good as the budget version of the Galaxy S series. Some aspects of the cell phone, such as the screen technology and chipsets used, are still the same as their older brother, which was released earlier.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE – Late Fan Edition Review

The Galaxy S21 FE has a similar design to the Galaxy S21, especially in the rear camera bump area. The camera bump on the Galaxy S21 FE appears to be more integrated with the back of the mobile and the color is uniform.

The back of the Galaxy S21 FE uses a plastic material while the frame of the mobile phone uses an aluminum material. Although it uses a plastic material, the Galaxy S21 FE for me still feels premium when in my hand.

The sides still use a curved pattern so it’s comfortable when I hold it. In fact, the current trend of flat-sided cell phones is on the rise, but in my opinion they are more pleasing to the eye but not grippy.

Also on the side are the power button and volume control. On the bottom of the Galaxy S21 FE there is a speaker slot, a USB C slot, and a dual SIM card slot.

There are four different Galaxy S21 FE color variants to choose from and in this review I am using the black color variant which looks attractive with a matte finish all over the mobile. In certain lighting, this black color looks more like dark gray.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE – Late Fan Edition Review

Galaxy S21 FE screen size of 6.4 inches with a flat design. The technology uses Dynamic AMOLED 2X with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
At the top of the screen there is a hole for the front camera which thankfully Samsung no longer has a silver circle around the camera like on the Galaxy S20 FE. my experience On the Galaxy S20 FE it kind of bothers the silver circle.

Because the quality of the display screen is very satisfactory. In addition, the screen is bright, so it is not difficult to use it in the sun. Also, the 120Hz refresh rate makes the phone screen animation look smooth.

But somehow, that refresh rate isn’t as adaptive as on the Galaxy S21, so the screen will still use a 120Hz refresh rate for different content. This may be what makes the Galaxy S21 FE as long as I use it in 120Hz refresh rate mode, the battery is a bit unsatisfactory.

Inside the display is a fingerprint scanner, not the more sophisticated ultrasound like the regular Galaxy S21. As for the fingerprint detection process, I feel fast and no problems.

For those hoping to get a Galaxy S21 FE with a Snapdragon chipset, they may be disappointed to see that at the moment in Indonesia their mobile phone uses the same Exynos 2100 chipset as the regular Galaxy S21.

Although the Exynos 2100 performs less on paper than the Snapdragon 888, as long as I use it, I am satisfied with its fast performance in running various applications.

However, twice I found that the mobile phone suddenly feels sluggish or sluggish. I don’t know why this happens, but I suspect it is because the refresh rate implementation is not optimal. When I change the refresh rate to 60Hz and then change it back to 120Hz, the performance is smooth again.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE Benchmark

The Galaxy S21 FE has 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB internal storage depending on the variant. It should be noted that the Galaxy S21 FE does not provide a microSD slot so the internal storage cannot be increased.

Another drawback I have found is that this mobile phone easily gets warm while using it. In fact, I only use the mobile phone for browsing and social networking.

In terms of sound, the Galaxy S21 FE uses stereo speakers that have a very high volume. The audio output quality sounds very good even at high volume levels.

Samsung Galaxy S21 FE – Late Fan Edition Review

The Galaxy S21 FE is equipped with three rear cameras, which are a 12MP ultra-wide camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and an 8MP telephoto camera. As for the front camera, it has a large resolution of 32MP which will satisfy the selfie lover even more.

The main camera of the Galaxy S21 FE is really good at recording photo objects. The images look sharp and the colors are very accurate. The available photo feature can also make interesting bokeh photos. Unfortunately, the sides of the image often look blurry for some reason.

If it’s an ultra-wide that’s fine, but it’s a normal wide lens. Fortunately I did not find this problem with telephoto lenses. I don’t know what’s wrong, whether it’s on the software or hardware side. To ascertain if the problem is on the hardware side, fixing it will be more complicated.

For image zoom, the Galaxy S21 FE can perform 3x optical zoom and up to 30x digital zoom. When compared to the telephoto camera of the Galaxy S21, the camera resolution of the Galaxy S21 FE looks much smaller but this mobile phone uses optical zoom.
The selfie camera on the Galaxy S21 was able to record my face pretty well. The details of the surface of the face and the clothes I use can be clearly seen. The portrait feature can also create an elegant bokeh effect.
In low-light conditions, the Galaxy S21 FE can still produce quite satisfactory photos. To make night photos clearer and brighter, there is a night mode that you can use.

Normally the night mode feature takes a little longer than the normal mode, but on the Galaxy S21 FE this process takes a lot longer and sometimes makes my hands a little sore not to shake the mobile camera.
I have high expectations for the Galaxy S21 FE battery life considering that in my previous review of the Galaxy S21 Ultra with Exynos chipset, the battery was quite satisfactory.

But in fact I am a bit disappointed with the battery life of the Galaxy S21 FE. I usually only get an average screen on time of about 3 hours 45 minutes in 120Hz refresh rate mode from 100% battery to 10%.
Even in testing with the PC Mark, results were less than satisfactory, with an average of 10 hours and 50 minutes in 60Hz screen mode, 50% screen brightness, and 100% battery. The same test in 120 Hz mode, the free result drops to only 7 hours 58 minutes.

In fact, the Galaxy S21 FE battery capacity is quite large, that is, 4500 mAh. This is probably because the display does not support adaptive refresh rate, which adjusts the refresh rate according to the content displayed to save battery life.
To charge the battery, the Galaxy S21 FE supports 25W fast charging technology. Unfortunately, Samsung again does not provide a charger in the box, so it is necessary to use another charger.

Charging the Galaxy S21 FE battery using a Samsung 25W charger took about 1 hour and 15 minutes from battery level 10% to 100%. Aside from being able to charge the battery using a cable, the Galaxy S21 FE also supports 15W wireless charging.
I am really satisfied with what the Galaxy S21 FE has to offer. But what I feel is not as satisfied as if I am using Galaxy S20 FE. Perhaps this is because the Galaxy S20 FE brought a new design at the time and was released at a more convenient time.

Putting that aside, the Galaxy S21 is a satisfying budget flagship phone with powerful performance and a stunning display. Unfortunately, the battery life is unsatisfactory at high refresh rates.

If I had the option of buying the regular Galaxy S21 FE or Galaxy S21 at the time of writing this review, I would honestly prefer the regular Galaxy S21 which is actually cheaper and has a better design in my opinion.
